Another Sunday Morning in the Ahwatukee Foothills

January 27, 2010 by , under Day Trip.

As part of our Sunday morning ritual, we loaded up the bikes and headed west to the roads in the foothills of South Mountain at the edge of Ahwahtukee. The morning was cool but not cold, overcast but not drab. Perfect for riding.

I awoke this morning at 7:30am, about 30 minutes later than I had planned. As I hastily packed the necessities for a day of riding, I cursed my alarm clock to no end. Or maybe it was my lack of discipline? Regardless, I assembled all of my gear and resigned myself to wait for my riding partner Nick to arrive at my house for our departure.

The anticipation for the ride started to kick in as I glanced furtively at my watch, 5 minutes late already. I will have to punish him on the road! Finally I see his car round the corner, a beautiful 2010 Subaru WRX STI wagon. Now my desire to outcycle and outlast him has been magnified and focused. After some initial doubts, we easily packed our bikes into the trunk and set off to our jumping off point.

Hopped up on our morning coffees and an insatiable competitive spirit, we unload our gear from the car and begin our pre-ride checklist:

Trash talking – Check
Air in the tires – Check
Chamois butter – Check

We ended up riding several different loops for a total time of 3 hours on the bike. Arizona is such beautiful country when you slow down, look around, and take the long way. Nothing better than exploring it on two wheels and the power of your own two legs.

At the end of the day, our competitive nature is overshadowed by the absolutely freedom and pure expression of bicycle riding. Can’t wait for next Sunday!
