Which wax is the best for your vehicle?

June 29, 2010 by , under Dealership News, Uncategorized.

Now that the brutal Arizona summer is upon us, it’s important to protect your investment by ensuring your paint job is protected. Using a wax or sealant is often neglected by owners but significantly helps prevent chipping and fading.

Applying a wax or sealant to your car a few times a year, depending on the type of product you’re using is the best way to preserve the appearance (and value) of your car for years to come. But how do you choose the sealant that’s right for your vehicle?

While many different varieties and brands exist on the market, the premium products can be broken down into two main categories; those containing Polymers, a mixture of polymers and acrylic resins, and Carnuba wax, a natural product that comes from the Brazillian tree of the same name. Each variety has its pros and cons. Let’s break them down, shall we?

Polymers

Also called sealants, these are the most common car wax products today. Sold in both paste and liquid form, polymers are easy to apply with a terry cloth towel or shammy and rub in for a do-it-yourself shine. These products offer long-lasting paint protection and only need to be reapplied twice a year or so. However, they tend to produce a superficial shine that is only reflective with light, rather than the deep “show car” luster produced by its rival, Carnuba wax.

Carnuba Wax

An all-natural product that produces the high-grade luster desirable to those who want to feel like a car collector, whether you are or not. Composed of anti-oxidant oils and esters of fatty acids, Carnuba wax creates a formidable barrier between your paint job and environmental elements. The deep, multi-dimensional shine occurs due to natural transparent and reflective properties. Although it seems like a superior product, Carnuba wax is also notoriously difficult to apply. Its stiffness can be frustrating and time-consuming to try and use yourself. There are several grades of Carnuba wax containing various amounts of the actual wax, such as white Carnuba, artificially refined for more softness, pure yellow Carnuba, and brown Carnuba, which is less pure than yellow, but has its own advantage of creating a particularly nice depth of shine. There are many products in between containing polymers that enhance usability while still adding the desired luster of the natural wax.

Whether you decide to go with a Polymer or Carnuba wax product, the best option is to take advantage of the detailing bay at your dealership, letting the experts educate you on which product might be best for your particular vehicle. And, the best part is, they have the professional buffing and polishing tools to get the job done beautifully while you wait in the air conditioning sipping a soda, instead of finding yourself sweaty and frustrated from hand-buffing sticky wax on your scorching driveway. When it comes to wax on and wax off, even Daniel-son would agree, let the professionals do it the right way.
