Subaru Defines a New Kind of Green
August 13, 2010 by SUBARULOVERS, under Environmentally Friendly, Green Vehicles.

The Subaru corporation has a much larger agenda when it comes to protecting our precious environment than just building low emissions vehicles! Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) really raised the bar when it became the first automotive assembly plant in the U.S. to be called “Zero Landfill” in May 2004. This plant recycles nearly 100% of its waste materials for other uses, with nothing being dumped in a landfill!
Each year, SIA recycles 99.3% of its scrap steel, plastic, wood, paper, glass and other materials. The remaining 0.7% is sent to Indianapolis to be incinerated, producing steam power for the city’s use. SIA’s recycling program is so efficient that the average single-family household contributes more waste to the landfill each year than does the entire SIA plant!
Subaru also implements programs with its suppliers to ensure stringent environmental guidelines are met when producing and packing materials. Encouraging environmental initiatives by suppliers has become an important part of Subaru’s business activity. Now maybe these suppliers can go on and teach their practices to other companies!
The SIA plant in Lafayette, Indiana produces the Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models, and has been a pioneer in the movement to create greener manufacturing facilities.

Notable SIA firsts:
1994-First auto assembly plant in the U.S. to become smoke-free.
1998-First auto assembly plant in the U.S. to be ISO 14001 certified.
2002-First auto assembly plant in the U.S. with an on-site solvent recovery system that produces dry still bottoms.
2003-First auto assembly plant in the U.S. to be designated a wildlife habitat for deer, coyotes, beavers, blue herons, geese, bald eagles, owls and many other native animal species.
2004-First U.S. manufacturing facility to reach ‘Zero-Landfill’ status.
2006-SIA is awarded U.S. EPA’s Gold Achievement Award in the agency’s WasteWise program to reduce waste and improve recycling.
Doing our part to help the environment is a commitment Subaru takes very seriously. Instead of just producing better, more fuel efficient vehicles, Subaru has taken the initiative to be at the forefront of changing what the manufacturing landscape looks like in America. Subaru has every intention of going the extra mile to preserve our environmental heritage for future generations, and our hope is that many others will follow in our footsteps. Then we will know we have truly made a difference.
